At Design Interviews

Interview with Kostas Metaxas : Frank Scott: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?. Kostas Metaxas : OASIS explores and celebrates the distillation of the moods, the shapes, the icons of over 30 years of travel and living in major cities distilled into a private sanctuary. .Frank Scott: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?. Kostas Metaxas : I wanted to achieve the opposite of the mainstream of bathroom design - where everything is ultra-minimal and hidden in a closet, so visiting the bathroom is like being imprisoned. Oasis is the opposite. The bathroom "breathes", it's sculptural, it's relaxing. It's a pleasure and a sanctuary. .Frank Scott: What are your future plans for this award winning design?. Kostas Metaxas : To develop further ideas for the different cities that I haven't yet done. .Frank Scott: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?. Kostas Metaxas : The ideas started with the basic bathroom product designs in April 2014 and the completion of the existing designs was at the end of August 2014. .Frank Scott: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?. Kostas Metaxas : I pursued an inspiration - which is how most of my ideas start. I wanted to explore these objects as sculptures. .Frank Scott: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?. Kostas Metaxas : I plan to license the production rights. .Frank Scott: What made you design this particular type of work?. Kostas Metaxas : I felt that it was an area which was neglected. There have been a few good bathroom ideas - mostly in the shape/materials used in bathtubs, but a more "sculptural" view was missing. I hope this collection ignites this. .Frank Scott: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?. Kostas Metaxas : I have to credit the Australian designer Joe Licciardi for making me think very differently about "bathrooms". .Frank Scott: Who is the target customer for his design?. Kostas Metaxas : Anyone who shares my idea that spending time in the bathroom should be blissful. .Frank Scott: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?. Kostas Metaxas : The sculptural elements, finishes, audacious materials and extravagance. It treats bathroom objects as sculpture. .Frank Scott: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?. Kostas Metaxas : OASIS - self-explanatory - a sanctuary. A place to escape from the everyday. .Frank Scott: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?. Kostas Metaxas : Mostly 3D cad programs .Frank Scott: What is the most unique aspect of your design?. Kostas Metaxas : That it is extravagant. That is has a spirit from each city that is distinctive. .Frank Scott: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?. Kostas Metaxas : No. .Frank Scott: What is the role of technology in this particular design?. Kostas Metaxas : New Technologies allow us to be able to visualise in 3D to produce sculptures. .Frank Scott: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?. Kostas Metaxas : The research was whilst staying in the most opulent bathrooms in 7 star hotels - particularly in Presidential suites in Paris, London, New York etc as the guest of the hotel when I was an Editor/Publisher. Then personal reflection. I tried to capture some of the "over-the-top" experiences. .Frank Scott: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?. Kostas Metaxas : I felt it was interesting enough to be submitted. .
